A native of Zhenning County, Anshun City, Guizhou Province, he graduated from Chongqing Institute of Architectural Engineering and is the founder of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
In 2018, he was named to the “List of 100 Outstanding Private Entrepreneurs Commemorating 40 Years of Reform and Opening-Up,” jointly compiled by the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce. He was also recognized as a China Economic News Figure for 2019 and, in 2019, was included on Forbes magazine’s list of “Business Leaders of the Year: Global Business Leaders.”
He has been named to prestigious lists such as TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, one of the 100 Outstanding Private Entrepreneurs of China’s 40 Years of Reform and Opening-Up, one of China’s 50 Most Influential Business Leaders, and one of Asia’s 100 Greatest Business Figures.
In September 1991, Huawei rented the third floor of an industrial building in Haoye Village, Bao’an County, Shenzhen, to use as a facility for developing stored‑program control switches. More than fifty young employees followed Ren Zhengfei to this dilapidated factory and embarked on an entrepreneurial journey fraught with challenges and uncertainty. They divided the entire floor into four work sections—single‑board assembly, power supplies, final testing, and preparation—plus a storage room and a kitchen. Working around the clock under the sweltering heat of the machinery, they designed and fabricated circuit boards, built telephone switchboards, soldered components, wrote software, and carried out debugging, refinement, and repeated testing. Under such conditions, Ren Zhengfei visited the site almost daily to monitor production and development progress, convene meetings to address pressing difficulties, and coordinate tasks to resolve a wide array of issues. During meal times, Ren Zhengfei and company leaders would join everyone at a roadside food stall for a communal dinner.

Weifang Tuowang Industrial Co., Ltd., established in 2009, is a privately owned high-tech enterprise dedicated to the research and development, production, sales, design, and construction of geotextile nonwoven materials. The company operates three wholly owned subsidiaries—Shandong Tuowang Nonwoven Fabric Co., Ltd., Sichuan Tuowang Nonwoven Fabric Co., Ltd., and Xinjiang Tuowang Nonwoven Fabric Co., Ltd.—and maintains five production bases in Weifang, Dezhou, Chengdu, and Urumqi, covering a total area of 300,000 square meters. As an industry-leading model enterprise, Tuowang has pioneered a nationwide distribution network, effectively addressing domestic customers’ concerns about delivery lead times and transportation costs. Currently, Tuowang operates 23 production lines for various nonwoven materials, including 14 lines dedicated to polyester filament needle‑punched nonwovens. Its principal products comprise polyester filament needle‑punched nonwovens, high‑performance polypropylene needle‑punched nonwovens, composite geotextiles with geomembranes, impermeable geomembranes (made from HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE), bentonite waterproofing blankets (GCL), and other geotextile‑related nonwoven materials. Annual output exceeds 100,000 tons, with its single‑product polyester filament needle‑punched geotextile consistently ranking among the top in national production and sales for many years. These products are widely used across numerous engineering sectors, including transportation, water conservancy, environmental protection, municipal landscaping, agriculture, mining, petrochemicals, and aquaculture and animal husbandry.
Tuowang Industrial is a vice‑presidential member of the China Industrial Textiles Association, a director‑level member of the China Geosynthetics Engineering Association, and a member of the China Building Waterproofing Association. It also serves as a national R&D base for geotextile nonwoven materials, a nationally recognized high‑tech enterprise, and a “Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative” enterprise in Shandong Province. Since its inception, the company has established one of the industry’s most comprehensive quality‑control systems and an advanced product‑R&D center, driving growth through scientific innovation. It has successively obtained certifications under the ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, and ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System, as well as certifications for its intellectual‑property management system, CRCC railway‑product certification, China Environmental Labeling Product certification, and municipal‑level Enterprise Technology Center designation.
